'NBA 2K21' goes full MMO using next-gen The City style

Between photo-realistic graphics and NBA 2K MT a brand new WNBA mode, basketball fans have a great deal to look forward to when it comes to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of NBA 2K21. And you can add The City, an expanded online hub world, to the list of next-generation specific capabilities.

The City assembles on the local gameplay style that's been a hallmark of this franchise throughout the past few years. Series developer Visual Concepts is creating everything basically sounds like an MMORPG. When you first visit The City, you'll start at"Rookieville." It is just what it sounds like: a tutorial area where you'll want to complete several tasks before the remainder of the online world opens to you. Once you're from Rookieville, you'll select among four Affiliations to join: North, South, East and West. Every faction calls a different borough of The City their home also has its own mayor.

Visual Concepts will handpick the match's first mayors from the NBA2K community to serve a first term. Afterward, every Affiliation will vote for their agent through an in-game poll -- in case you haven't had your fill of elections in the last week. Each term lasts six weeks, and as a mayor, you'll have the power to define your faction's visual identity. Visual Concepts will allow mayors to personalize their Affiliation's pajamas, court designs and more.

As you explore the hub, you'll discover basketball hoops attached to the side of a few buildings. Here you'll have the ability to challenge other players to games of HORSE and half-court games that feature up to six players total. On the way, you will also stumble upon NPCs that will give you quests to complete. Like their counterparts in virtually every other MMO, they will have an exclamation mark over their heads to allow you to know they've got an assignment for you to complete. Naturally, there are also in-game shops across the planet where you are able to customize your character's appearance.
