117 reported that they offered Jagex an option in the form of OSRS gold dropping their project after Jagex had released their own, and giving Jagex "collaborative control" over Runelite HD's visual style.

"They refused to participate," 117 said. "I am so dismayed and dissatisfied with Jagex and am so very sorry that, after this long journey I'm not able present this project to you. The mod of 117 doesn't seem to be in line with Jagex's guidelines for third-party clients, but the Runescape developer claims it's reviewing the guidelines next week to include references projects affecting the appearance and gameplay.

Original Runelite creator Adam1210 shared his views on Reddit by saying that allowing Runelite HD to continue will be a huge benefit for future updates made by Jagex.

"I am also adamantly against adding it to the "third third party guidelines,"" Adam1210 said. "Most of these guidelines are trying to define what the line between [quality of life] and cheating lies and I'm sure that most players agree that the current guidelines provide a clear example of this, and it can help keep the integrity of the game.

But there isn't an unfair advantage in the slightest for higher quality graphics but it will only affect you when you enable it. So - this is really an infringement of guidelines. So overall this is really an unfortunate situation for all parties and I'd like to buy OSRS GP see Jagex would reconsider."
